Most of us have gotten quite used to the words “the world’s biggest” being used to describe various aspects of “China”. And they have just proved that right once again by building the largest airport in the world in the city of Beijing.

The second airport named Daxing has already gotten itself a nickname and is more commonly called “the starfish airport”. It was built especially to ease the growing air traffic in the Chinese capital and is expected to accommodate 72 million passengers by the year 2025.

The airport was nicknamed “Starfish” and has the world’s largest single-building terminal

The new airport is located 46km south of Beijing’s city center and is currently 700K square meters big with an 80K sqm ground terminal space. Despite that, there are already plans for its expansion to serve up to 100 million passengers per year in the future.

The main terminal building was completed on June 13th, 4 years after it broke ground. It has 4 separate floors especially designed to separate and ease the flow of arriving and departing travelers. The terminal area contains a large luxury shopping area as well as cafes.

There are even five traditional Chinese gardens at the end of each hall for travelers to find a peaceful moment in. The architecture of the terminal building itself goes in line with traditional Chinese architectural principles that organize smaller structures around a grand central courtyard.

This particular design trait allows a maximum number of airplanes to be parked at a very short distance from the terminal so the walking distance for the passenger from the terminal to the aircraft is the shortest possible.
