President Trump Says Tariffs on Mexico Suspended Indefinitely
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced late Friday that he had suspended plans to impose tariffs on Mexico, tweeting that the country “has agreed to take strong measures” to stem the flow of Central American migrants into the United States. But the deal the two neighbors agreed to falls short of some of the dramatic overhauls the U.S. had pushed for.
A “U.S.-Mexico Joint Declaration” released by the State Department said the U.S. “will immediately expand the implementation” of a program that returns asylum-seekers who cross the southern border to Mexico while their claims are adjudicated. Mexico will “offer jobs, healthcare and education” to those people, the agreement stated.
Mexico has also agreed, it said, to take “unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration,” including the deployment of the Mexican National Guard throughout the country, especially on its southern border with Guatemala. And Mexico is taking “decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks,” the State Department said.
Crane collapse in Dallas kills one, injures six others
One person has been killed and six others taken to hospital after a crane fell onto an apartment complex in the southern US city of Dallas.
The construction crane was brought down during a powerful thunderstorm which hit Texas on Sunday.
Authorities say it broke apart and cut through five floors of the complex, which was opposite a building site.
The tower's parking garage was also damaged, and search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Local media reports said the person who died was a woman. Of those in hospital, two are in critical condition, said fire and rescue services spokesperson Jason Evans.
Hadestown captures 8 Tony Awards, including best musical
Hadestown, the brooding musical about the underworld, has reason to smile broadly: It's the best new musical Tony Award winner and nabbed eight trophies Sunday, including a rare win for a woman director of a musical.
Playwright Jez Butterworth's The Ferryman was crowned best play. Bryan Cranston, Elaine May, Santino Fontana and Stephanie J. Block all won leading actor and actress awards.
The crowd at Radio City Music Hall erupted when Ali Stroker made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony Award. Stroker, paralyzed from the chest down due to a car crash when she was 2, won for featured actresses in a musical for her work in a dark revival of Oklahoma!
FedEx to stop air deliveries for Amazon
DALLAS/SEATTLE (Bloomberg) — FedEx Corp. said it wouldn’t renew its U.S. air-delivery contract with Amazon.com Inc., paring a key customer relationship as the largest online retailer deepens its foray into freight transportation.
The new focus will be on “serving the broader e-commerce market,” with U.S. package volume from online shopping expected to double by 2026, FedEx said in a statement Friday. The Amazon contract with the Express air division expires at the end of this month, and doesn’t cover international operations or other services such as FedEx’s ground deliveries.
FedEx’s surprise move signals that the No. 2 U.S. courier will bank on e-commerce customers that lack Amazon’s bargaining power for big volume discounts. Amazon’s emergence as a logistics powerhouse is piling pressure on FedEx and United Parcel Service Inc. for cheaper and speedier deliveries, as the e-commerce leader builds its own aircraft fleet and delivery capabilities.
Panda Xiang Xiang, about to turn 2, to extend stay at Ueno Zoo
Xiang Xiang, a giant panda born at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo in 2017, was displayed to the media on June 10 ahead of her second birthday on June 12.
There's added reason to celebrate. Xiang Xiang, on loan from China, was due to be returned there when she turned 2, but the Tokyo metropolitan government was able to extend her stay until the end of December 2020
The almost 2-year-old cub, who has been breast-feeding and chomping down bamboo and bamboo leaves, has packed on the weight. She now weighs in at about 61.6 kilograms.
However, the extra bulk isn't getting her down. She bounded up a tree and ran around in her outside enclosure at the zoo in the capital’s Taito Ward.
然而，额外的体重并没有让她情绪低落。 她跳上一棵树，在首都 Taito Ward 的动物园外围栏里跑来跑去。
Since last autumn, Xiang Xiang has been slowly becoming independent from her mother, Shin Shin, and now lives alone.
Xiang Xiang's star power hasn't faded. Long lines of people wait daily to get a look at the fluffy female and items related to her still sell briskly.
